Chapter 146

Hannah's tone was edged with impatience. "That's my choice."

Vincent was at a loss for words, furrowing his brow.

Danica wasted no time and hurried over to Brinley's side, eager to stir up trouble. "Vincent, I saw everything-Hannah was downright cruel. She barely spoke before flipping the table and slamming Brinley's hands down. And let's not forget Brinley's heart condition!"

Margaret interjected, unwilling to let the accusation stand, "That's not true! You two started this mess.Brinley sure didn't seem sick when she was throwing out insults."

Brinley lowered her head, an anxious expression flickering across her face.

Raymond addressed Vincent, "We're here to set things straight with your family. Since the divorce is happening, let's move things along quickly. We're just ordinary folks, not cut out for the drama of a rich family."

Vincent pressed his lips together. "Raymond,Margaret-"

Raymond cut him off before he could continue. "Let's stop right there. No more excuses."

For a moment, Vincent couldn't find the words to answer.

An uneasy silence filled the room, broken only by Brinley's sobbing.

Vincent eventually pulled himself together and turned to Hannah. "Brinley got a heart condition. Why couldn't you handle things calmly?"

Hannah let out a scoff. "If she's really sick, the hospital is where she should be, not picking fights every chance she gets." Her glare moved straight to Brinley. "If you dare to mess with my parents again, your hands won't be the only thing you'll need to worry about. If you end up in the hospital, I'll make sure you're treated-and I'll even pay the bill. If you can't handle trouble, stop looking for it."

Vincent turned to Brinley, his question clear. "What have you done this time?"

Brinley pretended not to hear, her cries only growing louder.

Danica chimed in, "Vincent, you see, Brinley's in a lot of pain. You should take her to the hospital right away."

Vincent didn't answer Danica. Instead, his attention stayed locked on Hannah.

Hannah glanced down at her phone, just as a new message came in from her attorney. She said to Vincent, "The divorce petition has already been sent to your company. The court session is at nine tomorrow morning." Without sticking around, she quickly left the room with her parents at her side.

Felix fell in step behind them, saying nothing.

Acting on impulse, Vincent hurried out and blocked Hannah's parents' path. "Let me give you a ride."

A cold laugh escaped Hannah. "You never once bothered about my parents in five years. Why put on an act now? It's honestly pathetic."

Raymond ignored the uncomfortable look on Vincent's face and shut him down. "There's no need for that. I've said everything I need to say. Mr. Jones, let's keep things peaceful as we part ways."

Margaret couldn't hold her tongue. "Exactly. What's with all this sudden kindness when the marriage is ending?"

Vincent moved his lips but couldn't utter a word.

Soon,Felix pulled up with the car, and Hannah and her parents climbed inside. Left standing there, Vincent felt a sharp ache settle deep in his chest.

Meanwhile, Danica had waited for Vincent so long that she almost believed he had gone off with the Scott family. She finally hurried outside with Brinley, looking for him.

Danica scowled at the sight of him rooted in the doorway, and there was a scolding note in her voice."Why are you just standing there? Can't you see Brinley looks pale? Get her to the hospital right away."

Her words jolted Vincent back to the moment. He quickly called Derek. "I'll have Derek take you."

Brinley's voice trembled as she asked, "Vincent, aren't you coming with me?"

Vincent was silent for a moment before he replied,"I'll go too."

He needed to figure out why his heart had been hurting suddenly, as it had happened se already.

Brinley's face lit up with joy, convinced that Vincent still cared about her. She forced a drop of tears down for the effect. "Thank you, Vincent."

Danica gave Brinley a reassuring pat on the shoulder."You don't need to thank him. After all, you might join this family soon."

Brinley glanced down, her shyness making her hands ache a little less.

No emotion crossed Vincent's face.

Derek arrived soon after.

Within ten minutes, all three reached the hospital.

Vincent turned to Derek with a simple instruction to take Brinley to the emergency room for her injuries.Without another word, he headed off by himself.

Brinley hastily called after him, "Vincent, where are you going? I'm hurt so badly. Aren't you going to stay by my side?" He kept walking, answering over his shoulder, "I have something else to take care of. Derek will stay with you."

Brinley bit her lip, puzzled by what could be so urgent at the hospital. It seemed he still held onto what happened last time.

Yet, since he had brought her here in person, Brinley decided not to press her luck. As long as she succeeded at Miles' company bidding event in a few days, Vincent would surely see her in a new light.

Vincent didn't waste time and saw a doctor right away. Under the doctor's guidance, he underwent numerous tests but none revealed any heart issues.

Vincent explained that he'd been having trouble sleeping and couldn't concentrate, so the doctor gave him a prescription for sleeping pills.

A visit that was supposed to provide answers ended with him walking out carrying nothing but two bottles of sleeping pills.
