Chapter 187

Ethan Sullivan lowered his gaze slightly, a flicker of barely concealed frustration flashing in his eyes.

"Apologies. I forgot to mention it beforehand."

His voice was deep, laced with cautious hesitation.

Evelyn Laurent shot him a glance before stepping into the uniquely decorated restaurant.

"Online reviews say this place has exceptional flavors."

Ethan walked ahead, deliberately slowing his pace.

Soft lighting bathed the dining area, each table adorned with elegant candelabras. Evelyn noticed the surrounding patrons were all couples, the air thick with an intimate ambiance.

"Welcome!" A cheerful server approached. "Are you two here for today's Couple's Challenge?"

Evelyn narrowed her eyes. "What challenge?"

She turned to Ethan, her gaze sharp with accusation.

Ethan stiffened visibly. "Challenge?"

The server beamed. "We host daily interactive games for couples. Winners get exclusive discounts."

Evelyn's eyes turned razor-sharp, drilling into Ethan.

"I didn’t know this was a couples' restaurant," Ethan blurted, beads of sweat forming at his temple. "I genuinely picked it for the ratings."

Evelyn studied him for a long moment before scoffing. "You'd better be telling the truth."

Ethan exhaled discreetly, his clenched fists relaxing.

"Today's challenge is especially fun," the server added with a wink. "The gentleman carries the lady through an obstacle course. The last couple standing wins limited-edition matching plushies."

Ethan opened his mouth to decline—

"What are the rules?" Evelyn interjected, suddenly intrigued.

The server gestured toward a miniature track in the center of the restaurant. "Simple. Carry your partner through all obstacles, then hold the pose for three minutes."

Ethan's pulse spiked as he stole a glance at Evelyn’s reaction.

"Only men can carry women?" Evelyn asked, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

The server faltered. "Well... technically, the reverse is allowed..."

Alarm bells rang in Ethan’s mind.

Before he could react, Evelyn rolled up her sleeves with determined relish. "Then I’ll carry you."

Already calculating the discounts and prizes, she missed Ethan’s frozen expression.

"No!" The word burst from him.
