Chapter 287

The icy wind howled as Evelyn Laurent tightened her down jacket around herself. After a moment's hesitation, she slipped into Ethan Sullivan's car.

Warm air rushed over her, thawing her frozen fingers at last.

"How long have you been waiting here?" She couldn't help asking, noticing the redness on the tip of Ethan's nose.

Condensation blurred the view outside the window, but couldn't hide the exhaustion in Ethan's eyes.

His fingers paused slightly on the steering wheel. "Not long."

Evelyn spotted the whitened frostbite marks on his knuckles. Her heart clenched inexplicably.

"About yesterday..." She bit her lower lip. "My parents went too far."

The air inside the car turned heavy.

Ethan gave a bitter chuckle, his long fingers tapping the steering wheel absently. "They were right. I'm not good enough for you."

His words stabbed Evelyn's heart like a thorn.

She jerked her head up, meeting Ethan's deep gaze. "That's not true," she protested instinctively. "It's me—"

BANG!

The window rattled violently from a sudden impact.

Evelyn jumped, turning to see Theodore Langley's handsome face pressed against the glass.

"Evelyn!" Theodore yanked open the back door, teeth clenched. "Sneaking around with some man in the middle of the night?"

Ethan stepped out calmly, standing at attention. "Sixth Brother."

"Who's your brother?" Theodore bristled. "Don't you dare claim relation, old man!"

Evelyn cringed with embarrassment, grabbing her furious brother's arm. "We just ran into each other—"

"Ran into each other?" Theodore scoffed. "His car's been parked outside our building for an hour!"

Evelyn gaped at Ethan in surprise.

Under the moonlight, the man's ears turned pink, yet he remained standing tall and straight like a silent pine tree.
