Chapter 31
Evelyn's pen glided swiftly across the paper, its scratching sound filling the air.
She was so focused that loose strands of hair fell across her forehead unnoticed.
An hour passed as she solved the final problem.
"Professor Klein, I'm finished." She handed over the exam with trembling fingers.
Benjamin Klein accepted the papers and immediately passed them to the three professors. "Take a look. This is the apprentice I've chosen."
The professors huddled together, their eyes gleaming behind spectacles.
"This problem-solving approach..."
"She's even mastered advanced calculus?"
"She just graduated high school!"
Professor Montgomery suddenly looked up. "Young lady, have you considered studying mathematics with me?"
"Step aside, Montgomery. Her physics aptitude makes her perfect for my program!"
"Nonsense! Chemistry offers far better prospects!"
Professor Klein stroked his beard in amusement. "Now you're fighting over her? Who was it that said high schoolers weren't capable?"
Evelyn glanced uncertainly at her mentor.
"Don't worry." Professor Klein patted her shoulder. "Let them teach you whatever they want. You'll always be my official protégé."
Ethan Sullivan stood nearby, his eyes warm with approval. "Miss Laurent truly has remarkable talent."
"Then what are we waiting for?" Professor Klein waved his hand. "Let's get her enrolled at Harvard immediately!"
As the group reached the doorway, the glass door suddenly swung open.
"Ethan!"
Isabella Valentine stood framed in the entrance, her cheeks flushed. Her smile faltered momentarily when her gaze landed on Evelyn.
Ethan's brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. "What are you doing here?"
"I...I came to see Professor Klein..." Her voice trailed off as her eyes locked onto Evelyn's hand resting on the professor's arm.
