Chapter 289
Ethan's Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed his words.
He stared at Theodore's icy expression before sighing. "Theo, I truly didn't know Evelyn was her."
"Even when we brought her back to the Sullivan estate, I had no idea she was the one I'd been searching for."
His voice dropped low with remorse.
He wished he could travel back in time and strangle his past self for signing those documents.
Had he known Evelyn Laurent was that little girl, he'd never have agreed to break off their engagement.
Now the decision felt like shooting himself in the foot.
Theodore snorted. "Idiot."
His cutting remark held no mercy. "Ten years of searching and you still couldn't recognize her? Some love that is."
"Let's go, Evelyn. Don't waste time on this fool."
Theodore grabbed Evelyn's arm to leave.
She glanced back at Ethan's motionless figure.
The tall man looked heartbreakingly lonely in the morning light. Her heart softened. "Would you... like to join us for breakfast?"
Ethan's eyes instantly brightened.
He practically sprinted after them, terrified Theodore might change his mind. "Yes!"
Theodore rolled his eyes dramatically.
But seeing Ethan's pitiful expression reminded him how the man had always looked out for him since childhood.
Plus, Theodore knew Ethan's heart belonged solely to his sister. His anger cooled slightly.
"Only because you got kicked out," Theodore lifted his chin haughtily. "But if you try anything funny, my brothers won't go easy on you."
Ethan grinned like a cat who got the cream. "Whatever you say, Theo."
Theodore made a face but didn't protest further.
As they entered the living room, Alexander looked up from his newspaper.
His expression darkened immediately upon spotting Ethan. "Who invited you?"
"Evelyn did," Ethan answered sweetly, unable to hide his smugness.
Alexander's razor-sharp gaze shifted to Theodore.
"Big bro!" Theodore raised his hands in surrender. "She really invited him herself! I couldn't stop her!"
Bringing home the man whose engagement she'd just broken yesterday?
Theodore wanted to cry. He shot desperate looks at his sister.
Evelyn stifled a laugh. "Alexander, Mr. Sullivan kicked him out. He looked so pitiful..."
Ethan nodded eagerly, giving Alexander his best puppy-dog eyes.
Alexander's eyes narrowed dangerously, the air around him turning frigid. But ultimately, he said nothing more.
