Chapter 405
Evelyn Laurent had always been in excellent physical condition.
But that burst of energy was astonishing. She sprinted toward the shore at an incredible speed and plunged into the icy seawater without hesitation. The intense mental strain finally took its toll on her calf muscles.
Only when she confirmed Ethan Sullivan was safe did her nerves relax slightly. The moment she let her guard down, the pain of cramping seized her.
Fortunately, Ethan reacted swiftly.
His large, well-defined hands pressed firmly against her cramped calf, applying just the right amount of pressure.
The pain soon subsided.
After a brief hesitation, she offered him half of her blanket. "Don’t catch a cold either."
A flicker of warmth passed through Ethan's eyes.
Julian Langley finally snapped out of his daze and threw a spare blanket at Ethan. He rushed to his sister’s side and wrapped her tightly. "Evelyn, how could you be so reckless?"
He hadn’t even had time to stop her.
It had started with a worried shout for Ethan.
But Evelyn’s reaction was alarmingly intense.
Worse, she had seen the exact moment Ethan submerged beneath the waves.
Julian’s heart ached for her.
Evelyn pressed her lips together, silent.
Ethan continued massaging her calf, casually draping the blanket over himself, his gaze never leaving her.
"Get on the boat and rest. Don’t risk getting sick," urged Timothy Gold, still shaken by the incident.
The commotion had drawn everyone’s attention.
Beatrice Quincy and the others hurried over, only to learn it was a false alarm. Rachel Clemenson couldn’t resist sneering, "Such an overreaction."
Leo Clemenson quickly silenced her.
Rachel scoffed and stormed off.
Resentment radiated from her, especially toward Evelyn.
Why did Evelyn get to enjoy a luxurious island getaway while they struggled to survive?
All because of her family’s wealth.
No one paid Rachel’s bitterness any mind.
Hugo Rothschild stood at a distance, his dark eyes fixed on Evelyn as she was helped onto the boat. He shot Ethan a cold glare before turning away.
Hot water washed away the seawater clinging to her skin.
Only then did Evelyn fully realize what she had done.
She had jumped into the ocean without hesitation—to save Ethan.
Turns out, he was just practicing breath-holding exercises.
To make things worse, she had been cradled in his arms in front of everyone.
The image of them sharing a blanket refused to leave her mind.
Her cheeks suddenly burned.
Her heartbeat raced uncontrollably.
She pressed a hand to her chest. "Am I running a fever?"
The water had been freezing.
She quickly dried her hair and slipped under the covers.
Maybe sleep would fix it.
