Chapter 91

Ethan Sullivan's smile froze on his face.

His gaze instinctively darted toward Evelyn Laurent, panic flashing in his eyes.

They had agreed on this. Why the sudden change?

Ethan desperately tried to catch Evelyn's attention with meaningful looks.

The Langley brothers were infamous for their overprotectiveness, especially Theodore—the most hotheaded of them all. If he thought Ethan had wronged Evelyn, there would be no end to the consequences.

Just as Theodore rolled up his sleeves to charge forward, Evelyn spoke coolly, "Sixth Brother, he didn't bully me."

Theodore's aggressive stance deflated instantly.

He narrowed his eyes at Ethan, unwilling to let it go. "Really? If he dares mistreat you, Evelyn, we'll make him pay."

Evelyn sighed faintly and nodded.

Her sidelong glance at Ethan carried a silent warning.

Ethan inwardly groaned.

She was still hung up on his secret meeting with Sophia Lowell.

He knew Evelyn too well. Her hatred for the Lowell family ran deep—she wanted them gone, though she was biding her time. Sophia's recent provocations had already grated on her nerves.

And yet, he had met with Sophia in private.

All for that necklace—the one that might hold clues about his long-lost sister.

But what if the necklace had originally belonged to Evelyn?

What if Sophia had stolen it from the Langleys?

The thought unsettled him. Evelyn was around the same age as his sister, and something about her felt eerily familiar.

The investigation was ongoing, but records from a decade ago were nearly impossible to trace.

Ethan lowered his lashes, masking the turmoil in his eyes. He sat quietly on the sofa, listening to the siblings' conversation.

Theodore interrogated Evelyn about every detail of her daily life while shoving snacks into her hands. Ethan, the outsider, didn’t even warrant a glance.

Ethan didn’t mind.

His attention remained fixed on Evelyn, trying to catch a glimpse of the spot behind her ear. But her raven-black hair cascaded down, concealing it completely.

"Dinner's ready!"

Victoria Langley's voice rang out from the dining room.

Theodore immediately pulled Evelyn up. "Come on, Evelyn, let's eat!"

The table was laden with meticulously prepared dishes, all made by the Langley family.

Victoria seated Evelyn beside her. Theodore tried to claim the spot to her right, but a sharp look from his mother sent him retreating.

"You sit across from us."

Grumbling, Theodore squeezed between Sebastian and Julian.

Victoria beckoned to Ethan. "Ethan, sit here."

Obligingly, Ethan took the seat next to Evelyn.

A nearly imperceptible frown flickered across Evelyn's face, her eyes glinting with cold displeasure.
